City Center Redevelopment, Edmonton, Canada

Once pioneer aviation site of historic significance, Edmonton Central Airport will be transformed into an exemplary sustainable development. To meet this challenge, in 2010 the City of Edmonton launched a high profile international competition for the redevelopment of the 540 acre site strategically located north of downtown. At the crux of the wining scheme and its strategy of “beyond carbon neutral” are the former runways reused as new public armatures for the community, a major park as central heart for destination for the city, a strong network of open spaces that will link the park to adjacent neighborhoods. The project calls for 25000 to 30000 people and many new jobs will be served by a planned light-rail extension. Mixed-use development, NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) expansion, healthcare campus, and alternatives transit options will create a new vibrant center in synergy with downtown.
